A crise do coronelismo e da cafeicultura

A diversificação da economia, trazendo à cena social novos atores e as freqüentes oscilações da economia cafeeira não impediram que os coronéis - alicerçados na propriedade da terra e num sistema de alianças oligárquicas, típico da República Velha - continuem dominando a política local. Para manter essa hegemonia os grupos rivais além do dinheiro, corrupção eleitoral, recorriam, não raro, à violência privada e institucional. Assim, de 1908 a 1930, a cidade viveu sob o controle de quatro chefes políticos aliados: Carlos Baptista Magalhães, Bento de Abreu Sampaio Vidal, Dario Alves de Carvalho e Plínio de Carvalho. Este último manteve-se à frente da administração municipal de 1917 a 1930, quando foi cassado pela Revolução liderada por Getúlio Vargas.
