Filha de peixes (pesce, em italiano) peixinha é – no caso, filha do maestro Giacomo Pesce e da pintora, cantora e compositora Josephina Cantarella. Magdalena Cantarella Pesce "aos 4 anos de idade compunha suas primeiras músicas, dedilhando ao piano melodias singelas, e despertando assim a atenção de seus pais", revelou Esther Chamma no Jornal de Notícias de 15/01/1950. Após as primeiras lições de música, ministradas pelo pai, começou a ter aulas de piano com Marcelo Buogo. Tinha então 6 anos, e fugia dessa obrigação saltando o muro para o jardim da casa vizinha, como ela confessou a Esther Chamma: "(...) eu detestava as aulas de piano. (...) [Os pais] iam encontrar-me aflitos e zangados, sem saber como castigar tais traquinices; e eu, contentíssima por ter fugido assim a mais uma aula. Confesso que essa rebeldia prejudicou meus estudos musicais, mas talvez o espírito tenha adquirido mais força e liberdade".
