O sucesso no mundo virtual não trouxe nenhum benefício para o Belchior de carne e osso. Aos 67 anos, ele vive escondido com Edna em Porto Alegre. Não pode sair em público, pois é procurado pela polícia. Pesam contra Belchior dois mandados de prisão pelo não pagamento de pensões alimentícias. Uma devida à ex-mulher Ângela, com quem tem dois filhos já maiores de idade, e outra à mãe de uma filha de 19 anos que teve fora do casamento. Além das pensões, Belchior abandonou todos os demais compromissos e é cobrado na Justiça em processos que correm à revelia. O ex-secretário particular de Belchior, Célio Silva, ganhou um processo trabalhista contra ele no valor de R$ 1 milhão. Não há mais como recorrer. As contas de Belchior estão bloqueadas, e os imóveis que tinha comprometidos. Sem dinheiro, ele já se abrigou numa instituição de caridade no Rio Grande do Sul e morou de favor na casa de fãs que nem conhecia.
Belchior nasceu numa família simples no interior do Ceará. Foi o mais bem-sucedido entre 23 irmãos. Estudou medicina na capital. Abandonou o curso depois de quatro anos, para ingressar na carreira artística. Estourou nos festivais na década de 1970 e compôs músicas com letras poderosas, como "A palo seco". Seus sucessos foram gravados por Elis Regina, Jair Rodrigues e Roberto Carlos. Belchior é um artista com vasta cultura, domina cinco idiomas, conhece filosofia e gosta de física quântica. Até os anos 2000, lançava em média um disco por ano. "Ele era uma máquina, chegava a fazer três shows por noite. Era uma pessoa completamente dedicada à carreira", diz o parceiro e ex-sócio Jorge Mello.

Tudo isso ficou para trás. O sumiço de Belchior lembra o caso do escritor russo Liev Tolstói. Aos 82 anos, ele abandonou tudo para viver como camponês. Tolstói teve um fim trágico morreu de pneumonia depois de viajar na terceira classe de um trem durante o inverno soviético. Belchior, quanto mais se afasta da vida em sociedade, mais se afunda em dificuldades mundanas.
