Diz a tradição familiar que o Pütz era tão pequeno que veio da Alemanha de navio, dentro de um barril. Era motivo de chacota. Parecia apenas uma lenda, mas há algo de verdadeiro nesta história. Tudo indica que um menor de idade viajava como clandestino e foi adotado pela família Pütz. Ele não viajava dentro do barril porque era pequeno, mas para esconder-se. Teria, possivelmente, entre 14 e 16 anos e passaria a ser o filho mais velho da família Pütz. Seu nome era Jakob Bornhausen, patriarca de uma das mais ilustres famílias de Santa Catarina.
