Nos livros paroquiais da freguesia de seu nascimento encontramo-lo frequentemente no exercicio do ministério sacerdotal,já na capela de São Gonçalo, já na de Nossa Senhora,da Saúde, Filiais de Barra Longa.

A tradição, que aceitei e a que dei curso em Genealogias Mineiras, de que Rôla fora alcunha posta ao padre José Francisco e, afinal, adotada pela família, não tem fundamento, como tantas outras, que estragam a história mineira.

Rôla é cognome antigo; veiu da metrópole. A ele têm os Rôlas pleno direito e por titulo mais nobre.
