Casado com a sobrinha Custodia.
Manuel Inocêncio, foi em 1840, isto é, aos 26 anos, nomeado tenente-coronel comandante do Batalhão da Guarda Nacional de S. Roque.
Depois da morte do velho chefe, continuaram os filhos Emanuel Inácio e Antônio Joaquim como sócios, com a casa comercial que era conhecida pelo nome de Loja Grande, o que mostra a sua preeminência no comércio local.

Ele teria acedido em ser condecorado por uma concessão ao espírito da época, segundo o qual as distinções honoríficas serviam como penhor de dedicação ao trono: aceitá-las era dar arras de fidelidade à Monarquia. Mas, transigindo nesse ponto, limitou-se a aceitar o título de oficial da Ordem da Rosa, o grau mais modesto na série das condecorações do império: ele que possuía os requisitos morais e recursos materiais para aspirar e obter as mais altas veneras: poderia ter sido, se o quisesse, barão, visconde etc.

Da Ordem mais relevante para a menos relevante: Ordem de Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo, de São Bento de Avis, de Santiago da Espada, do Cruzeiro, de Pedro Primeiro, e da Rosa. A insígnia desta era uma estrela branca de seis pontas maçanetadas, unidas por uma guirlanda de rosas. De acordo com o Banco Central do Brasil, 14.284 pessoas foram agraciadas com a Ordem Imperial da Rosa por d. Pedro II.

Suas crenças católicas - ele era católico de fé, mas não assíduo nas práticas do culto - não o tolhiam na amizade a seu cunhado Antônio Joaquim dos Santos, que era ateu, como ateu era Antônio dos Santos Sobrinho, a quem ele muito estimava. E a mim mesmo, quando após o curso da Escola Normal, em 1887, regressei para S. Roque ardendo no entusiasmo de minha recente conversão ao positivismo, ele se limitava a dizer, abananando a cabeça, com ar de recriminação:
- Positivista, você, nascido no seio da Igreja, de pai e mães católicos!...
