A respeito do doutor Nicolau Pereira de Campos Vergueiro escreveu Azevedo Marques o seguinte:

"Natural de Portugal, formado em leis pela universidade de Coimbra, passou ao Brasil e estabeleceu-se na cidade de S. Paulo em 1802, adotando a honrosa profissão de advogado e aí casou-se com... (como ficou dito)

Em 1821, tendo abandonado já advocacia, foi eleito membro do governo provisório, no qual prestou notáveis serviços à causa da liberdade. Eleito deputado à constituinte portuguesa, aí negou-se a assinar a constituição, porque nela não foram atendidos os direitos do Brasil que havia adotado como sua pátria. Em 1823 foi eleito para a constituinte brasileira e sofreu, como outros membros preeminentes do partido liberal, a prisão a que foram votados os liberais na dissolução daquela assembléia. Em 1826 foi eleito deputado pelas províncias de S. Paulo e Minas, e em 1828 escolhido senador por esta última. No ano de 1831, a 17 de março, foi Vergueiro um dos patriotas que assinaram a famosa representação dirigida ao imperador dom Pedro I, a qual deu em resultado a abdicação, pelo que, no dia 7 de abril, foi eleito pelos senadores e deputados reunidos na corte para ser membro da regência provisória.

Em 1832 fez parte do ministério com a pasta do império, e em 1840 sustentou o projeto chamando ao trono dom Pedro II ainda menor. De 1837 a 1842 serviu o cargo de diretor do curso jurídico de S. Paulo.

Os seus importantes serviços foram em 1841 agraciados com a grã cruz da ordem do Cruzeiro e em 1846 com as honras de gentil homem da imperial câmara. Outra vez chamado ao ministério no ano de 1847 ocupou a pasta da justiça. Compreendendo quanto é interessante ao futuro do Brasil a emigração européia, o senador Vergueiro, nos últimos vinte anos de sua vida, propugnou quanto pôde para o desenvolvimento deste benefício no Brasil e principalmente na assembléia provincial de S. Paulo; e na sua importante fazenda de Ibicaba, do município de Limeira, ensaiou diversos sistemas de colonização, cujo fruto colhem ainda seus herdeiros. Faleceu no Rio Janeiro a 18 de setembro de I859 com 81 anos idade."
