Otoniel de Campos Mota notabilizou-se pela cultura literária, pelas iniciativas de cunho social e pelas controvérsias em que se envolveu.
Nasceu em Porto Feliz (SP) no dia 16 de abril de 1878, sendo filho de José Rodrigues Paes e Bernardina Deoclécia da Mota Paes. Fez os estudos primários em sua cidade natal e os secundários em São Paulo, como aluno do Curso Anexo da Faculdade de Direito do Largo de São Francisco. Converteu-se na igreja metodista, tendo sido o único membro de sua família a se tornar evangélico. Pouco depois, uniu-se aos presbiterianos.
Foi membro do Instituto Histórico e Geográfico de São Paulo, da Academia Paulista de Letras (na cadeira nº 17, tendo como patrono Júlio Ribeiro) e da Sociedade de Estudos Filológicos de São Paulo, da qual foi um dos fundadores e o primeiro presidente.
Escreveu amplamente na imprensa secular (Planalto, Papel e Tinta, Correio Paulistano, Folha da Manhã, Revista do Arquivo Municipal), em particular no campo de sua especialidade "a filologia, da qual era estudioso constante.
O jornal O Estado de São Paulo, que o teve como assíduo colaborador por muitos anos, publicou seu último artigo, intitulado "Sereias Desafinadas", exatamente no dia de sua morte. Colaborou com revistas e jornais evangélicos como O Estandarte, Revista de Cultura Religiosa, Semana Evangélica (publicada em 1928-1929), Unitas, Cooperador Cristão e Cristianismo. Seu talento de exegeta pode ser visto nos artigos que escreveu sobre Pedro e a pedra (Mt 16.18).

O casal Mota teve seis filhos: Maria Mota Pirotelli, Adelina Mota de Cerqueira Leite, José de Barros Mota, Emília Mota de Cerqueira Leite, Antônio de Barros Mota e Gerte Mota Fink.

A enfermeira Maria Mota Pirotelli foi diretora administrativa do Hospital Evangélico de Sorocaba.

Adelina Cerqueira Leite teve aprimorada formação em música e arte dramática. Produziu literatura infantil e peças teatrais. Na área da hinologia, fez traduções de hinos e corais, e trabalhos originais. A coleção Cânticos do Natal teve doze produções de sua autoria. Ela e seu esposo, o industrial José Cândido de Cerqueira Leite, instituíram em 1943 a Fundação Cerqueira Leite, com objetivos sociais.
