. Por volta de 1850 o capitão António Vieira Branco, português de nascimento e brasileiro de coração, se instalou nas terras de Pirapora, depois denominada Colégio de Pirapora e mais tarde simplesmente Bairro do Colégio e nas terras do bairro Areia Vermelha, respectivamente. As terras foram doadas ao capitão António Vieira Branco, pelo imperador por ato de bravura e relevantes serviços prestados à coroa imperial.

Formou uma importante fazenda com trabalho escravo, instalou uma serraria e uma máquina de benefício de algodão inaugurada em 1857. Na fazenda eram fabricados vários tipos de ferramentas, tais como foice, machados, enxadas, martelos, serrotes, pregos e parafusos, além de ferramentas de uso agrícola. As terras do capitão Vieira Branco, veterinário, chegou a ser fazenda modelo no Brasil Império.
