Carreira

Emília Viotti da Costa finalizou em 1954 a graduação em história na Universidade de São Paulo, onde permaneceu até o doutorado.[2]

Em 24 de junho de 1999 recebeu o título de professora emérita da Faculdade de Filosofia, Letras e Ciências Humanas da USP, onde foi professora de 1964 a 1969, quando foi aposentada pelo AI-5.[1]

O episódio aconteceu pela resistência dos intelectuais de esquerda ao regime político implantado com o golpe de Estado de 1964. A ditadura militar não perdoou, especialmente, o engajamento da professora contra a reforma universitária de 1968.[2]

Depois de proferir a aula inaugural com um tema sobre A crise da Universidade e debater o mesmo assunto em um programa de televisão com o ministro da educação Tarso Dutra, a mais jovem professora foi presa em 1969, juntamente com outros colegas, e posteriormente aposentada compulsoriamente da USP,[2] onde mais tarde passou a fazer parte do conselho consultivo.[3]

A partir de 1973 passou a atuar nos Estados Unidos, onde até 1999 foi professora de história da América Latina na Universidade de Yale e, posteriormente, recebeu o título de professora emérita.[1][4][5] Também foi professora nas universidade Tulane e Illinois[5]

Morreu em 2 de novembro de 2017, aos 89 anos, de falência múltipla dos órgãos, em São Paulo.[6]
