HISTÓRICO
Em meados do século XIX, povoadores fixaram-se ao longo da estrada de ligação entre Sorocaba e o Sul do País, formando novas fazendas dedicadas a culturas diversas. Nessa época, ao sul de Itapetininga, um de seus povoadores, o Tenente Urias Emídio Nogueira de Barros, juntamente com parentes e amigos concentrados numa extensa área, formou o antigo bairro fazenda Velha.
Segundo informações, Maximina Nogueira Torres, filha do Tenente Urias, em homenagem ao seu marido falecido, Miguel dos Santos Terra, doou à igreja, terras para construção da capela, sob a invocação de São Miguel Arcanjo, daí derivando o nome do povoado que se formou em torno da ermida. Foi elevado em 1877, à freguesia com o nome de São Miguel Arcanjo.
O seu desenvolvimento sócio-econômico iniciou-se com o cultivo do algodão, que saía da roça para descaroçamento na cidade, em beneficiadoras Nacionais e Estrangeiras, que na década de 1920, somavam vinte estabelecimentos. Segundo alguns historiadores, essa foi a fase mais rica do Município.
