Veio com seus pais em 1846. Sua mãe, Anna Bárbara Monzlinger faleceu na travessia do Oceano Atlântico em novembro ou dezembro de 1846 e seu pai faleceu em 02/01/1847 na Lagoinha de Leste (Lagoa do Peri), em Florianópolis, onde ficavam os imigrantes em quarentena, antes de serem alojados nos seus respectivos lotes coloniais. Foi criado, com seu irmão Peter, pelo imigrante dinamarquês Heinrich Westrupp.
