      À la suite de la Révolution française et des principes de séparation des mariages religieux dans les églises et des mariages dans les États, les mariages religieux ne sont plus légaux et les couples souhaitant se marier sont tenus de le faire civilement. Pour cette raison, il est devenu courant dans la culture française que les familles religieuses organisent deux mariages: la cérémonie civile puis la cérémonie religieuse. Une loi votée en 1789 obligeait les citoyens à se marier au chef-lieu de canton du département au lieu de la commune locale. Cette loi a été abolie en 1800 lorsque les couples ont à nouveau été autorisés à se marier dans leur commune. À l'exception de cette petite période (1789-1800), il était de coutume qu'au moins l'un des membres du futur mariage réside dans la commune où avait lieu le mariage civil. Les fonctionnaires civils ont enregistré les mariages qu'ils ont célébré, généralement dans un format de paragraphe prescrit, inscrit dans un livre et conservé au bureau d'enregistrement. La couverture et l’exhaustivité de cette collection varient selon les communes.
