Giuseppi, M. S. "Naturalizations of Foreign Protestants in the American and West Indian Colonies," Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Company, 1979, p. 104 gives the following: Juror's Name: Philip Klingersmith, Sadsbury Twp. (should be Salisbury), Northampton Co. Sacrament, when taken: Sept. 22, 1765. The following notation accompanies the entry: "[The following certificates for this Colony have not been entered into the Entry Book] C.O. 5, 1276" Significance of this information is not clear to me.

[Note by compiler: If, as the above source seems to indicate, Philip KLINGENSMITH was naturalized, he must have been born abroad.]

Papers from Klingensmith, John Philip's Family Bible of Westmoreland County. Bible owned by Don Rupert, translated by Pastor Paul Miller Ruff. Reported in the WPGS Quarterly, Spring, 1996, Vol. 22, No. 4.

This is the text of the Bible record as recorded:

In the year 1760, on the 15th of July, John Philip Klingenschmidt was born in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. His father was Philip Klingenschmidt and his mother Christina. He was brought to holy baptism. The sponsors were Peter Klingenschmidt and Elisabeth his wife.

[Note by compiler: This baptismal record establishes a link between Peter KLINGENSMITH and Philip KLINGENSMITH.]

The first taxable list of Berks Co., PA, Colebrookdale Twp., taken about 1752, lists a Peter Klingensmith, along with a Herpboth of whom were married, since single men were listed separately.

Family Tree Maker CD130, "Pennsylvania German Church Records, 1729-1870" Pennsylvania German Church Records II, Lutheran Church in New Hanover, Birth and Baptisms, (c) Broderbund Software, Inc., Banner Blue Division, February 16, 1999 p. 218 of the imaged book, "The New Hanover Lutheran Church" shows the baptism of 9 children of John and Catherine Kolran on June 13, 1752. These children ranged in age from 14 years to 3 years. Each had different sponsors, with the sponsors including Paul Moser and wife, Conrad Boehm and wife, Christina Boehm, etc. The sponsor for Peter Kolran, age 7 years, was Peter Klingensmith.

From at least 1755 through 1762, record is found of the baptisms of Blockhouse Peter Klingensmith and wife in the Oley Hills Union Church, Berks Co., PA. The Reitenauers are also found in the records of this church. . . .

About John Peter Klingensmith

This area of PA was a frontier area in the late 1700's, prone to conflicts between the residing Indians and the white settlers of the area. Roughly 800 pioneer settlers in Hempfield, a large number of them German. In 1774 a group of settlers signed and presented the Ft. Allen Petition to then Governor John Penn. This petition was signed by "Phillip Klingenschmidt" and "Peter Klingenschmidt", along with 70+ others. ***I have not proven/disproven if this Peter is the same as the John Peter I have listed, and I am making no claim of mine being the signer until/unless further documentation (birth/death info., land records, etc.), can be found).***

The petition stated, in part: “…there is great reason to fear that this part of the Country will soon be involved in an Indian war.” It went on to note how defenseless the area was, emphasizing vulnerability of many people. The populace were filled with … “apprehensions of seeing their...infants fall a sacrifice to savage Cruelty…” In response to that plea for protection, Fort Allen was built. For further information see: http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/1pa/1picts/frontierforts/ff31.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/1pa/1picts/frontierforts/ff31.html

Fort Allen was the name given to a structure erected in "Hempfield township, Westmoreland county, between Wendel Oury's and Christopher Truby's." This structure was probably a stronghouse, or a blockhouse erected for the emergency and never required, so far as is known, for public use. It was named probably in honor of Andrew Allen, Esq., of the Supreme Executive Council. The fort was commanded by Col. Christopher Truby (in one source, spelled "Trubee"). Fort Allen was a frontier fort for Dunmore's War in 1774 and the American Revolutionary War. It was also known as Truby's Blockhouse. From the names of the signers, the locality was manifestly in the German settlement of Hempfield township to the northwest of Greensburg. There is a stone monument commemorating Fort Allen. which was erected on May 1, 1929. See the Media section for pictures.
