William worked as an overseer to his father-in-law's large farm located in Kemper County, Mississippi. William was known to be a tough individual. One night a number of ex-slaves who worked on the farm showed up at William's house with guns and demanded William to come out. William came out shooting and killed the leader of the group and the rest scattered. William was concerned with justice in the reconstruction era Mississippi, so he and his wife and 5 children, Albert being one of them, fled to Texas. This was about 1876. In 1877 both William and Nanny died and a letter was sent to John William Gully. He sent someone to pick up his grandchildren and bring them back to Mississippi, Before the children arrived, John William Gully was assassinated while on the way home. The 5 children were raised by thier widowed Grandmother.
