Martha Pressly Baird Blackley CHARLOTTE - Martha Pressly Baird Blackley died peacefully, surrounded by her family on Tuesday, August 18, 2015. Martha was born in Charlotte, NC on August 28, 1931, the daughter of Fred Leland Baird and Mabel Lowry Pressly. She grew up in Shelby, NC, attended Erskine College, and graduated from Meredith College in 1953 with a degree in elementary education. In June 1954 she married Shem Kearney Blackley, Jr. of Shelby and the couple lived in London, England for a year while Shem completed a Rotary International Fellowship. During their time there, Martha and Shem cultivated life-long friendships with individuals and families, some of which have endured to the families' fourth generations. Martha and Shem loved to travel and returned to England several times over the years. After studies in England, Shem was commissioned in the US Navy, and served four years during which time two of their sons were born. In 1959 Shem began his career with Duke Power and the couple settled in Charlotte, NC. After moving to the Sardis-Matthews area, Martha and Shem joined Sardis Presbyterian Church in 1970. Martha was among the seventh generation of her family to be part of the long, rich history of that church. She was an active member for 45 years and was involved in many aspects of church work from Bible study to preparing women's shelter meals. Martha received an Honorary Life Membership of Presbyterian Church USA in 1998. Martha's calling and life's work was loving and caring for her family and many friends. She delighted in each of her children and grandchildren and loved and supported them in all their endeavors, faithfully and enthusiastically attending their many activities and family events. Her friends could count on her to be there for them in good times and bad, with a visit, a phone call, a meal, or a blueberry pie. All who loved her will remember her countless heartfelt, beautifully written notes and cards, which seemed to arrive at just the right moment. She was defined by her graciousness, generosity, compassion, strength of character, and faith in Jesus Christ. She loved Pressly family reunions, family beach trips to Ocean Isle, and especially gatherings at "Family Affair," the cabin that her father helped build on Lake Norman. She loved to entertain and was a wonderful hostess and cook; she made entertaining look so easy. Martha is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Shem Blackley; son Fred Blackley (Nancy) of Shelby; son Shem "Chip" Blackley III (Shannon) of Shelby; son David Blackley (Mary Beth) of Charlotte; daughter Ruth Harris (Brett) of Charlotte; brother Jim Baird (Jane) of Burlington; sister Mabel Lacey (Morris) of Shelby; twelve grandchildren: David Blackley, Baird Yasenchok (John), William Blackley (Victoria), Pressly Williams (Matthew), Charlotte Blackley, Martha Blackley, Gracie Blackley, Shem Blackley, Virginia Harris, Philip Harris, John Harris, and Mark Harris. Martha also leaves many friends, old and new, who were dear to her heart, including Meredith friends, Shelby friends, and her "Beach Bunch," who celebrated birthdays and special times together for 40 years. She and Shem especially enjoyed their adventures with the traveling "Six." In recent years Martha enjoyed and relished many friends, new and old, as she and Shem began to live at their retirement apartment in Plantation Estates Community in Matthews. Her new friends there have quickly recognized her wonderful qualities. A worship service to celebrate Martha's life will be at 1 p.m. on Sunday, August 23, 2015, at Sardis Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. A visitation reception will follow in the fellowship hall. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sardis Presbyterian Church, 6100 Sardis Rd., Charlotte, NC 28270, or Shelby Presbyterian Church, 226 E. Graham St., Shelby, NC 28150. Arrangements by J.B. Tallent Funeral Service. Online condolences may be shared through www.tallentfuneralservice.com.
