Harry Cato Cage, of Portland and Castalian Springs, died on February 10, 2013. He was 93 years old. He was born in Riddleton, Tenn., on June 27, 1919. He was a direct descendant of William Cage, who, in 1785, settled what is now known as Cages Bend just outside of Gallatin. He spent his entire life in Sumner County, except when attending college at Sewanee and enlistment in the U.S. Marines in 1943, serving in World War II. During his tour of duty, he taught new pilots to fly off aircraft carriers in Pensacola and San Diego. He attended Portland High School and was on the football team with Bob Cummings. While at Sewanne, he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He returned home and met his future wife, Harriet Kaveney Cage, daughter of William Bright and Jessie Hunter of Gallatin. They enjoyed being neighbors of the Wisemans (J.W. and Louise, Joe and Ruby), Paul Allen and Chris West, Charlie and Bernice Green, Wilburn and Lola Mae Empson. Over the years, Cato and Willard Chandler loved to crappie fish. He also enjoyed bird hunting with Dolphus Gregory and James Leroy Wilkinson on his father’s farm in Lebanon. Cato retired after the death of his wife Harriet, in 1982. He moved to his lake house on his father’s farm in Castalian Springs and lived there into his 91st year.
