he Williams family, making up the greater number of Williams residing in S
ampson, Cumberland and the surrounding area counties in North Carolina.
He is believed to have emigrated from Wales to Virginia about 1739, then m
oved south into North Carolina about one year later. Shortly thereafte
r, he married Katharine Galbreth, American born daughter of Neil Galbret
h, who was a Scot.
"Robert Williams was a son of John and Katharine, born about 1750, marri
ed first to Barbary Culbreth who was the mother of five children. Family t
radition says Barbary was killed by lightning in 1790, while hanging out t
he wash. She reportedly was holding her fifth and youngest child, Philli
p, in her arms at the time. He survived but was physically and mentally da
maged. About 1792 Robert married Susanna Daniels and to their union was bo
rn eight children. Susanna died in 1872 at the age of 107 years.
Joel Williams (Sr.) was one of the sons of Robert and Susanna William
s. He was born in 1800 and married Tomzella (Tomsil) Culbreth. They were t
he parents of seven children. Joel died after May 17,1841, which was the d
ate on his will.
Joel Williams, (Jr.) was born in 1828 and married Sarah (Sallie) Daught
ry in 1849. There were seven children born to them. Nathan, 1850, Joel E
., 1851, Alexander, 1855, John Robert, 1857, Mary E., 1860, Sarah E., 186
3, and Thomas Jefferson, 1866. Joel (Jr.) enlisted Feb. 1863 in Sampson Co
unty , at the age of thirty four to fight in the Civil War. He was assign
ed to 2nd Co. C, 36th Regi- ment, 2nd North Carolina Artillery and was tra
ns- ferred to Fort Fisher on July 19, 1864 to 2nd Co. D of that Regimen
t, where he was captured there on January 15, 1865, He was sent to a Yank
ee prison in Elmira, New York, where he died on March 4, 1865 of pneumoni
a, and is buried in grave No. 1972 in Woodland National Cemetery.
His wife Sarah (Sallie) Williams was listed as alive on the marriage licen
se of their son, Alexander, when he married in 1882.
Alexander Williams (Sr.) was born 1855, third son of Joel (Jr.) and Sar
ah (Sallie) Daughtry Williams. He married first in 1882 Emily Catherine Po
pe. She died in 1890 leaving three small children, Jessie, Judson and Marg
aret. Alexander (Sr.) was active in his community and always remembered f
or his red hair. He was one of the founders and a charter member of Sherwo
od Missionary Baptist Church , (now destroyed), in Duke township, not f
ar from where Chicora Cemetery is located. Emily and Alexander are buri
ed in what was the Church yard cemetery. It should be noted that the south
