From a letter written by Kittie Bell Taylor to her nephew, Henry Carruth, and dated Jan. 7, 1896, Guntersville, Ala., comes the following: "I recd a letter from Montie Cain written the 17 Dec. but did not get it til the last day of Dec. It contained the sad news of her Uncle Sam Cain's death. He had been complaining for a year and could not speak loud, had been sick but was able to work about the house and go to his meals. He ate his supper on Monday night the 11, and was sitting before the fire eating an apple, he began to cough and his lungs bled rapidly and he was gone in a breath without a word. She said a few days before he had a bad hemmorage but kept up all the time, said no one dreamed of him having consumption but he must have had it. His sudden death was a terrible shock to the family and friends too."He was buried on Wednesday by the Masons and his favorite preacher conducted the funeral service. The text was 14 Chapt., 13 verse of Rev, and the 34 Psalm. He was 72 years, six months, and 17 days old. Your Aunt Emily and Maggie both sick and very feeble. Georgia and Gus are the youngest and main stay." This letter is in the possession of Dr. Thomas A. Carruth, a Bell descendant.
