He became a student at the Drawing Academy in Groningen, where he drew attention to himself early on, when in 1801, at the age of 17, he was awarded a medal for the best drawing of a nude model at the Groningen Drawing Academy.
Advertised in 1811 in the Groninger Courant, among others, that he gave drawing lessons. Working in Groningen until 1815. On April 13, 1811, he entered into a notice of marriage with 21-year-old Grietje Schuit (1790-1857) from Groningen, and they married five days later. According to the census register of 1849, the couple came to live in Amsterdam in 1815. On January 20, 1816 their son Pieter was born in Groningen. Haatje Pieters Oosterhuis was the teacher of his son Pieter Oosterhuis (1816-1885), who initially also earned a living as a painter, later as a photographer. Oosterhuis and his family lived in 1835 in the Jordaan of Amsterdam at the address Boomstaat 18. On December 14, 1854, at 3 o'clock in the afternoon, Oosterhuis died at the age of 70 in the house Boomstraat 606.
Haatje Pieters made many drawings that were printed by others. Apparently he did not engrave himself.
Numerous designs for history prints were drawn by him from 1813 to circa 1835. Most famous at the time were the Battle of Waterloo (1815) and Het Onzet van Leiden in 1574. Also portrayed several of his contemporaries, in particular members of the royal family and a number of Amsterdam preachers.
