Had Been Sick But 8 Days
With Pneumonia
Prosperous Celery Grower
Pneumonia from which he had been sick only 8 days proved fatal last Wednesday to E. (Elte) Harsema, 64, owner of a large celery farm and greenhouse, proprietor of Celeryville (Ohio U.S.A.) Mr. Harsema was taken sick ten days before his death with influenza. Pneumoniadeveloped and he rapidly grew worse. Funeral services were conducted atthe residence Saturday afternoon with Rev. P. M. Redd of the United Brethernchurch officiating and burial was in the New Haven cemetery. Surviving the daughter Grace with whom he made his home, son Andrew and two grandchildren. Mr. Harsema came to this countryfrom Holland 36 years ago first going to Grand Rapids, Michigan. He came to Willard (Ohio) twenty-threeyears ago and was one of the most prosperous celery growers on the marsh. He has a sales room in connection with his celery garden and did a large retail business in vegetables. Ten years ago he and his daughter started in the greenhouse business in a small way and developed the business to large proportions with several thousand square feetunder glass. To Miss Harsema goes the greenhouses and these she will continue to manage. The son takes over the celery land. The Harsema greenhouse had sold birds in connection the other business and reports became circulated that Mr. Harsema was afflicted with parrot fever. Reports also had it that two birds had died recently. Members of the family say that one bird last summer but that its death was caused by eating Paris green. Mr Harsema had twice before had pneumonia and it is believed that the other attacks had weakened his resistance to the disease.
