John was the son of Benjamin Wolf and is said to have been related to the Russell's. He and his family arrived in Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) in 1839 on board the "Juliet". Samuel BARNETT and his wife (Rachael SOLOMON) and family were also on board. John became the licensed publican at the "Blacksmith's Arms", Pontville. Hobart Town Gazette 4 October 1842 - Licence to retail wine & spirits - John Davis, "Castle Inn", Pontville.
For many years, John managed the Tasmanian Inn at Brighton for his father-in-law , Judah Solomon. Solomon died in 1856 and left the bulk of estate to his son by his mistress Elizabeth Howell, Joseph Solomon. Joseph took John Davis to court seeking monies he claimed were owed by Davis to his father. The court held, however, that the monies had been gifted to Davis: Solomon vs Davis as reported in the Hobart Town Mercury 3 November 1856.
