Jean werd geboren in Stettin, nu een Poolse stad aan de Duitse oostgrens, maar in 1698 een stad in handen van het Zweedse koninkrijk. In 1721 echter ging de stad over in Duitse handen, en kwam het te vallen onder het Pruisische rijk.
