De jongste zoon van Arnoldus Hermans en Geertrudis Theeuwen, Joannes Hermans, die vanuit het Limburse Arcen naar Duitsland verhuisde, was als kind vaak ziek. Zo had hij bijvoorbeeld veel te lijden aan kinkhoest. Van december 1877 tot november 1879 bezocht hij het gymnasium in Rolduc (bij Kerkrade) in Zuid-Limburg, waar hij in het internaat woonde. Hier leerde hij vloeiend Duits en Frans te spreken. Dit gymnasium is steeds van belangrijke betekenis (in het bijzonder voor de kinderen die priester werden) geweest. Gegoede families in Noord-Limburg zagen het als een eer, een daar opgeleide priester als zoon te hebben. Maar toch was dat niet allen een statussymbool. Er waren ook veel moeders die geloofd hebben dat als een van haar zonen priester werd, bijvoorbeeld de geboorte van een kind voorspoedig zou verlopen. Zowel de ene als de andere beweegreden voerde soms tot een sterke druk op de zonen om priester te worden. Ook Joannes Hermans wou aanvankelijk priester worden. Maar omdat hij geen roeping had verliet hij net als velen van zijn schoolgenoten in Rolduc (die ook geen roeping voelden) het gymnasium. Zijn moeder, een diepgelovige vrouw, betreurde deze beslissing van haar zoon zeer. Joannes (in de Duitse schrijwijze Johannes) Hermans trouwde in mei 1896 met Elisabeth Brormann uit Bokel en verhuisde naar Essen/Olb. Zijn vrouw kwam evenals haar zwagerin Johanna Meier zu Holsten uit de parochie Ankum en stamde uit een oude, sedert vele honderden jaren daar wonende boerenfamilie. Elisabeth Brormann werd in 1872 geboren. Haar vader (die bij de geboorte van zijn dochter reeds 56 jaar oud was), was reeds meerdere jaren daarvoor overleden. Johannes Hermans werkte eerst in Essen als bedrijfsleider bij de Firma Taphorn. Deze firma handelde in hout. Door zijn manier van werken bij deze firma zou hij wezenlijk aan het welvaren van dit bedrijf bijgedragen hebben, wat hem de bijnaam "Taphorns rijkmaker" bezorgde. Daarom was het temeer betreurenswaardig dat hij zich na de dood van zijn chef Leonhard Taphorn, niet met diens opvolger, August Meyer, (de tweede man van de weduwe Taphorn), over de bedrijfsvoering niet kon verstaan. Daarom gaf hij zijn baan als bedrijfsleider op en vertrok naar Bersenbruck en bouwde daar een eigen bedrijf op. In de huidige Bahnhofstrasze bouwde hij in 1902 het eerste huis. Kort daarna verhuurde hij dit huis en verhuisde weer naar Essen, waar hij weer een huis bouwde. Tenslotte ging hij in 1911 met zijn familie voor goed in Bersenbruck wonen. Alle acht kinderen van Johannes Hermans en Elisabeth Brormann werden in Essen geboren.
