Godfried II, bijgenaamd de Jonge was reeds mede-regent vanaf 1136 (omwille van de hoge leeftijd van zijn vader Godfried I, overleden op 5 januari 1139) en volgde deze formeel op als hertog van Neder-Lotharingen (=Godfried VI) en landgraaf van Brabant op 25 juni 1139.

Hij was een zoon van Godfried I van Leuven en Ida van Namen. In 1139 braken ook de Grimbergse Oorlogen tegen de Berthouts, heren van Mechelen en Grimbergen, uit.

Vóór 9 februari 1140 bevestigde Koenraad III hem als hertog van Neder-Lotharingen, ten nadele van de erfopvolgers van Walram II van Limburg († 16 juli 1139). Walram, zoon van Hendrik II van Limburg, deed opnieuw de strijd om het hertogschap ontbranden.

Godfried II huwde met Lutgardis van Sulzbach. Ze hadden een zoon, Godfried III van Leuven, gehuwd met Imana van Loon en Margaretha van Limburg.
