Op 11 februari 1857 vond de eerste Hardenberger 'hardrijderij op schaatsen' plaats. De Drentsche en Asser Courant van 14 februari 1857 schreef: Hardenbergh, 12 feb. Gisteren heeft alhier eene hardrijderij op schaatsen plaats gehad, die eene groote menigte toeschouwers op de been bragt; algemeen was de nieuwsgierigheid gespannen, vooral omdat dit het eerste volksvermaak van dien aard was, dat hier plaats vond. Naar prijs en premiën, door de directie uitgeloofd en waartoe een groot aantal ingezetenen van stad en ambt Hardenbergh hadden bijgedragen, werd door zestien vlugge rijders gedongen; overwinnaars zijn geworden de in deze omstreken bekende schaatsenrijder E. Lenters te Collendoorn, ambt Hardenbergh, dien den prijs behaalde, en G. Goris en Alb. Bouwhuis, beide te Hardenbergh wonende, die de premiën bekwamen. Der directie, waarvan de heer wethouder B. Nijzink president was, komt alle lof voor de vervulling harer taak toe'.
