    Zoals zoveel van de militairen die in die tijd de ruggengraat van het Nederlandse leger vormden was ook de Stuers zijn loopbaan in Franse dienst begonnen. Hij werd al opvallend jong in de Orde van de Réunie opgenomen.
    In Nederlandse dienst verdiende de Stuers zijn sporen in de aanhoudende gevechten in Nederlands-Indië. Hij was de schoonzoon van Generaal de Kock die de jonge officier tijdens de Java-oorlog tegen de opstandige prins Diepo Negoro verantwoordelijke taken toedeelde.
    In 1853 werd de inmiddels tot luitenant-generaal bevorderde de Stuers het commando over het Nederlandsch-Indische leger opgedragen. Hij moest de Indische strijdkrachten en weermiddelen overeenkomstig het in Augustus 1853 vastgestelde Koninklijk Besluit en naar de voorstellen van den generaal-majoor baron von Gagern reorganiseren. De Stuers nodigde de talentvolle eerste-luitenant Weitzel uit, hem als adjudant te vergezellen. Na vijf jaar werd de Stuers opgevolgd door luitenant-generaal van Swieten. Weitzel, die een vruchtbaar auteur was legde de ambtsperiode van de Stuers vast in een in 1862 verschenen boek.
    De herinneringen die de Stuers zelf over de oorlog tegen de opstandige Javanen vastlegde verschenen in het Frans. Een vertaling van dit werk verscheen in 1847. Gedenkschrift van de oorlog op Java van 1825 tot 1830 vertaald door H.M. Lange (luitenant kolonel bij het leger in Nederlands Indie, ridder MWO vierde klasse). Uitgegeven door Johannes Muller te Amsterdam.
