    Josias Eckhardt was de zoon van Jean Andeas Eckhardt en Maria Spieringh.
    Jean Andreas was raad van Zijne Koninklijke Majesteit van Groot Brittanni'é
    en resident van het hof te Brussel. Josias werd geboren in Den Haag maar
    vertrok omstreeks 1697 naar Breda. Hij was daar rentmeester van de domeinen
    van de prins van Oranje. Waarschijnlijk woonde hij in één van de gebouwen,
    dië eigendom waren van de prins, zoals het Kasteel met zijn vele bijgebouwen,
    het huis in het Valkenburg of het Klooster. In 1706 trouwde hij met Jeanne
    Georgette de Villegas, de dochter van Gautier de Villegas, commandeur van
    Breda, [b]
    Korte tijd daarna zou hij zijn weerdagboek starten, waarschijnlijk puur uit
    liefhebberij. Zijn waarnemingsregisters zijn voornamelijk van belang vanwege
    de zeer uitgebreide weerbeschrijvingen. Deze gegevens zijn een belangrijke
    bron van informatie, omdat ze de meest uitgebreide waarnemingsreeks uit die
    tijd vormen. Vanaf 1710 verrichtte hij tevens temperatuurmetingen met een
    zeer primitieve thermometer of meerdere thermometers, waarschijnlijk van
    Engelse makelij. In die tijd maakte een Engels instrumentmaker, Francis
    Hauksbee (de jongere) een reis, waarbij hij ook ons land aandeed. Hij demonstreerde
    op zijn reis thermometers van John Patrick
