    De Nederlandse tak van de familie komt voort uit de uit Londen afkomstige John Quarles (1596-1646/47), die deel uitmaakte van de Court of Merchant Adventurers en als zodanig te Delft en Rotterdam woonachtig was. In laatstgenoemde stad huwde hij Petronella van Berckel, dochter van de burgemeester aldaar. Hun kleinzoon Pieter (1677-1744) trouwde in 1716 met Cornelia Splinter van Loenersloot en kreeg twee zoons, Willem (1717-1781) en Lodewijk (1719-1781). Willem werd onder erkenning van zijn adeldom in 1751 door keizer Frans I in de adelstand verheven en verkreeg op deze wijze voor zichzelf en voor zijn nakomelingen de titel van (rijks)baron. Hij en zijn afstammelingen noemden zich voortaan 'Quarles de Quarles', terwijl de afstammelingen van zijn broer Lodewijk en diens nazaten zich ter onderscheiding 'Quarles van Ufford' zouden noemen.
