Notes about Benedictus Velleman

Benedictus en Rebekka trouwden op 14-12-1938 te Amsterdam. Het jonge gezin vestigt zich op 20-12-1938 op het adres Jodenbreestraat 24, 3-hoog. Enkele huizen verderop wonen de ouders van Rebekka, op nummer 35. In de jaren voor de oorlog is Benedictus marktkoopman. Vanaf april 1939 verkoopt hij kousen op de markt van het Waterlooplein. Op 28-april-1942 wordt hun zoontje José geboren. Vervolgens weet Benedictus een baantje te bemachtigen bij de Joodse Raad, hij komt te werken bij de afdeling Broodvoorziening op de Nieuwe Herengracht 23, vanaf 09-07-1942. Dan slaat in februari 1943 het noodlot toe voor het jonge gezin. Op 24-02-1943 worden zij op transport gesteld naar kamp Vught. Van daaruit wordt Benedictus op 04-05-1943 gedwongen te werk gesteld in het Aussenkommando Moerdijk. Kort daarop worden Rebekka en José op transport gezet naar kamp Westerbork. Dat is op 08-05-1943. Op 09-05-1943 worden zij geregistreerd in Westerbork. Een paar weken later, op 20-05-1943 overlijdt de jonge José in het kamp. De volgende dag wordt hij gecremeerd, de urn met zijn as wordt bijgezet op de begraafplaats van Diemen. Zijn moeder doet op 22 mei aangifte van zijn overlijden bij de Gemeente Westerbork. Rebekka wordt enkele dagen later op 25-mei-1943 op transport gezet naar het vernietigingskamp Sobibor. Zonder haar man en kindje wordt zij daar bij aankomst vergast, op 28-mei-1943.

Eén week later, op 3-7-1943 arriveert Benedictus in kamp Westerbork. Geheel in het ongewisse over het lot van zijn vrouw en zoontje. Hij wordt vervolgens op 20-7-1943 op transport gezet, net als zijn vrouw, naar Sobibor. Dit zou het laatste transport zijn wat vanuit Westerbork zou vertrekken met als eindbestemming het vernietigingskamp Sobibor.
