    Mortsel is ontstaan rond 2 woonkernen: Mortsel-Dorp en Oude God. Mortsel-Dorp is de oorspronkelijke woonkern van het oude landelijke Mortsel. De toren van de kerk (Sint-Benedictuskerk) is het oudste gebouw van Mortsel; de toren dateert uit de 15de eeuw. De tweede woonkern ontstond op de plek waar de verbindingsweg Mortsel-Lier uitkomt op de verbindingsweg Antwerpen-Mechelen.

    Het bombardement op Mortsel gebeurde op 5 april 1943. Het achtste Bomber Command van de USAF moest voor hun laatste missie voor ze zouden afzwaaien de Erla-fabriek op de Vredebaan te Mortsel bombarderen. In die fabriek van voordien Minerva, werden Duitse jachtvliegtuigen hersteld. Slechts enkele bommen troffen doel. De rest viel op de dichtbevolkte kern van de wijk Oude God. De bommenwerpers waren namelijk op zware weerstand gestoten, zowel van FLAK als van herstelde Duitse jachtvliegtuigen die vanop het vliegveld van Deurne opgestegen waren. Om de jachtvliegtuigen te ontwijken, losten de bommenwerpers hun lading boven bewoond gebied, zoals bij bombardementen boven Duitsland gebruikelijk was. Er vielen 936 dodelijke slachtoffers, waaronder 209 kinderen. 1342 mensen geraakten gekwetst. De materiele schade was enorm: 1259 woningen werden zwaar beschadigd. In 2004 kreeg Mortsel van de Belgische regering erkenning voor het oorlogsleed. Een echt "oorlogskruis" kreeg Mortsel echter niet.
