Johannes wordt op 13 juli 1830 op het adres Bloemstraat, gang nr.44, kanton 5, geboren. Getuige is Gerrit Jan Nijhoft. Met deze Johannes loopt het beter af dan zijn overleden gelijknamige oudere broertje. Blijkens zijn huwelijksakte in 1864 is hij scheepsdokter geworden. Op de overlijdensakte van vader Jacobus staat hij als “geneeskundige” vermeld (overigens staat daarin zijn leeftijd foutief als 34 jaar vermeld) en op een overlijdensakte van een buurman op Vlieland in 1868, niet lang voordat Johannes daar zelf overlijdt, staat hij als “”geneesheer” vermeld. Voor die tijd een opmerkelijke uitschieter voor een kind uit een kleermakersgezin uit de Amsterdamse Jordaan?
