Het echtpaar woonde in de Bogaardenstraat no.1141. Dionisius Hupkens was notaris, en wel van 1782 tot 1797, in welk jaar hij op nonactief werd gesteld in verband met de door Franse overheersers ingevoerde reorganisatie van het notariaat, die het aantal notarissen drastisch reduceerde. Hij deelde dit lot met zestien andere Maastrichtse ambtsbroeders, die allen hun functie moesten neerleggen binnen acht dagen na de publicatie op 4 Gerrninal V {deze Frans-Republikeinse datum komt overeen met 23-A3-1797) door de Centrale Administratie van het Departement Nedermaas van de lijst van de notarissen die het aanging. Een samen met zijn collega's Gudi, Habets en Wouters bij deze Adminisfratie ingediende petitie tot handhaving in hun functie, had geen resulkat. In plaats van de zeventien afgezette notarissen werden er in Maastricht door de Franse overheid vier nieuwe benoemd. Deze vier Maastichtse notarissen, benoemd bij besluit van 7 Nivöse V (overeenkomend met 27-12-1796) waren Emanuel Joseph Lefebre, Arnoldus Hegemans, Henri Nierstrasz en Joannes Theodorus van Gulpen (RAL, Notarieel Archief, inv. no. 21751.

"Ex-notaire" Dionisius Hupkens heeft zich gedurende de Franse tijd in de politiek begeven en maakte van 1801 - 1813 deeluitvan de conseilmunicipal(gemeenteraad). Na de verdwijning van de Fransen heeft hij zijn vroegere ambt weer een kleine twee jaar uitgeoefend (RAL, Notarieel Archief, inv.nrs 3023, 3024).
