Hij blef ongehuwd en woonde in het ouderlijk huis aan de Bogaardenstraat no.1141 (in 1850 gewijzigd in nummer 1421) tezamen met een huishoudster en een dienstmeisje. Hij volgde zijn vader op.
Blijkens de Memorie van Successie en testamentt van de overledene, was deze zeer vermogend. Naast drie huizen, resp. in de Bogaardenstraat, de Grote Gracht en Nieuwstraat met een geschatte waarde van f 12.000,- bezat hij een groot aantal percelen bouw- en weiland in Wolder, Schin op Geul, voerendaal, Klimmen en een groot aantal obligaties. Het totale actief van de nalatenschap bedroeg ruim f290.000,- waarvan na aftrek van het negatief nog altijd f 288.000,- voor de erfgenamen overbleef, te weten zes nog in leven zijnde kinderen van zijn broer Johannes Gerardus Hupkens, mevrouw van Hasselt-Hupkens en Pieter Jansz.
