    Voor de oorlog was Josephus al gepensioneerd. Toen de oorlog uitbrak werd hij weer opgeroepen door de KNIL. Daarom is hij door de Japanners als militair geïnterneerd. Vanuit een jappenkamp werd hij in 1943 met de Junyo Maru getransporteerd naar Sumatra, om aan de Pakan Baroe spoorlijn tewerkgesteld te worden. Echter de Junyo Maru is nabij Benkulen (Sumatra) getorpedeerd door de Britse onderzeeboot de HMS Tradewind op 18 september 1944
    Zijn lichaam is nooit gevonden. (Op het Ereveld Leuwigajah te Cimahi staat een monument voor de gevallenen van de Junyo Maru)

    De Junyo Maru was een Japans vrachtschip, en was onderweg van Java naar Sumatra met naast de bemanning nog 2300 Amerikaanse, Australische Britse en 1100 Nederlandse krijgsgevangenen en 4200 Javaanse werkslaven (Romoesja's). Ze waren allen bestemd omaan de 220 kilometer lange Pekanbaru-spoorweg tussen Pekanbaru en Muaro te werken. Het is één van de grootste scheepsrampen in de geschiedenis, waarbij ongeveer 5600 opvarenden omkwamen
