Obituary of Richard Jeffer
JEFFER, Richard, age 96, of Midland Park, died peacefully on Sunday, October 18, 2009 at the Holland Christian Home, North Haledon. Born in Naekirk, the Netherlands, he emmigrated with his parents at the age of five months to Midland Park where he lived his entire life until entering the Holland Christian Home.
Dick was a self-employed fuel dealer. He was a lifelong outdoorsman who loved raising beagles and was a founding member of the Inter-County Beagle Breeders Association. He organized the Midland Park Rangers, a semi-pro baseball team, in the 1930's. He was a battery mate to Johnny Vander Meer of two consecutive no hit fame with the Cincinnati Reds. In the 1950's he re-established the Rangers into one of the top semi-pro teams in the North Jersey area. In addition he organized many amateur basketball and bowling teams. He was a founder of the Grandview Rod and Gun Club, Inc. Dick was also a member and part-owner of the Panther Creek Club, Inc. Dick was a life-long member in the Midland Park Christian Reformed Church and served as organist for twenty five years.
Dick is survived by his three sons Richard G. of Lake Pleasant, NY, Robert P. of Shohola, PA, and Peter A. of Midland Park. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson, two brothers: Herman of Wyckoff and Donald of Natural Bridge Station, VA, and one sister, Henrietta Bender of Bradenton, FL. Dick was predeceased by his beloved wife of 65 years, Mathilda (De Haan) in 2001, his two grandaughters: Lori Jill in 2002 and Sandra Lee in 1977, and two sisters and two brothers.
Visiting hours, Thursday 2 - 4 & 7 - 9 PM at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home, 257 Godwin Avenue, Wyckoff (www.vpfh.com). Funeral service, Friday, 10 AM at the Vander Plaat Funeral Home. Interment, Valleau Cemetery, Ridgewood.

Het is een zondagmiddag zoals zondagmiddag hoort te worden doorgebracht in Midland Park, een dorpje in de Amerikaanse staat New Jersey, op een klein uur rijden van New York City....

In deze gemeenschap van zevenduizend inwoners wordt de zondagsrust gekoesterd. Hoewel, niet ver van de kerk weerklinken opstandige kreten. Een groepje jongens speelt er voetbal, al dan niet met toestemming van de ouders.
'Ach, tijden veranderen', verzucht Dick Jeffer, ondanks zijn 84 jaar een toonbeeld van vitaliteit. De geboren Nederlander, die als zes maanden oude zuigeling met zijn ouders Nijkerk inruilde voor een nieuw bestaan in de Verenigde Staten, heeft in een hoekje van de openbare bibliotheek plaatsgenomen op zijn praatstoel.
Jeffer is er om te verhalen van Johnny, zijn oude kameraad, die vorige week maandag op 82-jarige leeftijd in Tampa, Florida, overleed. De mooiste anekdote? 'We piepten er op zondagmiddag altijd tussenuit om te honkballen. Ons uniform gooiden we uit het raam, en stiekem speelden we dan wedstrijden tegen buurgemeenten.'
Johnny is Johny Vander Meer, een honkballegende in de VS. Hij groeide op in de aloude Nederlandse enclave Midland Park. De zoon van een steenhouwer zorgde in 1938 als werper van Cincinnati Reds voor twee opeenvolgende no-hitters, een nimmer geevenaard sportief wapenfeit. Een no-hitter is een tamelijk unieke prestatie. Het betekent dat geen enkele slagman honk noch thuisplaat heeft bereikt, tenzij de werper vier wijd (een walk) heeft toegestaan. Slechts drie honkballers in de Major League, de Amerikaanse profcompetitie, slaagden er in om twee keer in een seizoen een no-hitter te realiseren, maar nimmer gebeurde dat in twee duels achter elkaar.
Die prestatie heeft Johnny Vander Meer in de categorie van de allergrootsten geplaatst, en Midland Park is daar met recht reuzetrots op. Jeugdmakker Dick Jeffer is de drijvende kracht achter het piepkleine museum dat in een hoekje van de bibliotheek aan de fameuze honkballer is gewijd.
Naast gesigneerde ballen, knuppels en uniforms van grote historische waarde ligt er een paar schaatsen achter het vitrineglas. Het zijn de Friese doorlopers van Johnny's moeder. Een invitatie van koningin Beatrix is keurig ingelijst. De uitnodiging dateert van 1982, toen de bekende Amerikaan op bezoek was in het land van zijn ouders en bij Hare Majesteit werd ontboden.
Dick Jeffer herinnert zich de twee no-hitters nog als de dag van gisteren. Bij de tweede wedstrijd was hij zelfs persoonlijk aanwezig, samen met honderden dorpsgenoten die Johnny Vander Meer wilden toejuichen toen deze na zijn eerste no-hitter op 11 juni 1938 opnieuw in actie kwam op Ebbets Field in Brooklyn.
Bijna 39 duizend mensen waren vier dagen nadien getuige van de eerste avondwedstrijd van de Brooklyn Dodgers onder kunstlicht. Er was vuurwerk, Olympisch kampioen Jesse Owens liep een demonstratiewedstrijdje en Johnny Vander Meer kreeg een horloge voor zijn prestatie. De echte klapper moest nog komen. Diezelfde avond herhaalde hij het huzarenstukje, ondanks drie zenuwslopende walks in de negende inning.
Van de ene op de andere dag was Johnny een nationale bekendheid in de Verenigde Staten. Hij kreeg een felgele Buick van een sponsor, waarmee hij de meisjes in Midland Park gek maakte. Hij trad op in een bioscoopfilm en tot op hoge leeftijd was hij een graag geziene gast op souvenirshows.
Johnny streek dan met het plaatsen van zijn handtekening binnen enkele uren zo'n vijftienhonderd dollar op. Regelmatig, en zonder enige ruchtbaarheid, maakte hij jaarlijks enkele duizenden dollars aan Midland Park over. Dat geld werd gebruikt voor onderhoud van het Little League-honkbalveld. Want al sleet hij zijn dagen in Florida, zijn (Hollandse) wortels is Johnny nooit vergeten.
Zijn record van twee opeenvolgende no-hitters wordt onaantastbaar geacht, net als Hank Aarons 755 home-runs, Joe DiMaggio's 56 straight games, Cy Youngs 511 overwinningen en Pete Rose's 4256 hits. Afgelopen vrijdag werd Johnny Vander Meer begraven, met in zijn linkerhand een honkbal.Tim Overdiek
