Hermanus groeide op in het gezin van zijn oom Hendrik van de Berg op boerderij "Het Plaggengat". De oogst van de appelboomgaard van zijn oom moest Hermanus telkenjare met paard en wagen vervoeren naar de markt van Ermelo. Op weg daarnaar toe telde hij omstreeks 1900 eens 114 boerderijen. Dit geeft wel aan dat Het Plaggengat ver van Ermelo verwijderd lag.

In 1922 liet Hermanus, samen met zijn broer Teunis achter Het Plaggengat op het adres Horsterweg 21 voor nog geen fl. 3000,-- een nieuwe boerderij bouwen op 2,6 ha grond (Eo.43). Het boerderijtje was een gemengd bedrijf met bouwland, weiland en hakhout. In 1959 werd het verkocht.
