Ruth Doloris was born on Oct. 31, 1921, on a farm northeast of Alton, Iowa, the daughter of Andrew and Wilhelmina (Mouw) Plender. She was raised on that farm and attended a country school.
On Nov. 14, 1941, she married Frank Andrew Van Der Maaten at Alton Reformed Church. They farmed south of Orange City, near Carnes, where she was a homemaker, raising their family and assisting on the farm. In 1980, they moved into Orange City and enjoyed wintering in Arizona and Texas. Frank passed away on April 9, 2004, in Orange City.
As a widow, Ruth was proudly independent, doing her own housekeeping, cooking, and driving until her four-week battle with cancer. She was a member of First Reformed Church and enjoyed hosting Sunday morning coffee after worship and Sunday school each week. Besides children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, their college friends were always welcome at Ruth's home. She was a gracious hostess and was always ready for guests with sandwiches, bars, brownies, cake or popcorn. She also offered homemade sauscijes to her family and friends and was proud that her children shared her love of baking and cooking. Ruth also enjoyed playing the piano and was able to play any hymn or song by ear. The grandchildren and great-grandchildren loved to sing and dance while Grandma Ruth played.
During the past several years, Ruth was a regular at Hardees in Orange City, spending time with her coffee group. Friday evenings were usually reserved for taking her sister-in-law, Arta Plender (now age 102), out for dinner. Several years ago, when asked about driving others, she replied, "I have to, I'm the youngest."
Survivors include her six children, Dennis (Vera) Van Der Maaten of Boyden, Iowa, Audrey (Jim) Van Gorp, Randy (Karen) Van Der Maaten, and Deb Ver Steeg, all of Orange City, Cathie (Bob) Keyser of The Woodlands, Texas, and Andy (Karen) Van Der Maaten of Decorah, Iowa; 14 grandchildren, Sue (Andy) Ten Braak, Tim (Melissa) Van Der Maaten, Dan (Jani) Van Gorp, Krista Carnet, Julie (Kevin) Lors, Jenny (Ryan) Simmelink, Josh (Rachel) Van Der Maaten, Stacie (Harlan) Jorgensen, Shawna (Gary) Pottebaum, Todd (Heidi) Ver Steeg, Katie Keyser, Megan Keyser, Maria (Alejandro Alfaro) Van Der Maaten, and Allie Van Der Maaten; and 25 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Thomas Keyser; and 11 brothers and sisters, Margaret (Henry) De Haan, Mina (Frank) Muilenburg, Lambertus Plender, Lambertus (Bert) Plender, Henrietta (Bill) Ter Horst, Henry Plender, John Otto I, John Otto II, Arbella (Joe) Kleinhesselink, Matilda (Arie) Bloemendaal, and Bernice (Ray) Faber.
