Notes about Pieter Sijmonsz (Manje)

Waarschijnlijk was hij een klein mannetje. Z.v. Simon Pietersz Manje en NN NN.

--------------------

Children: Geert (Dec 22 1641), Sijmen (Aug 20 1645), Pieter (Jan 24 1649), Dirk (1650), Sijmon (Nov 30 1653), Sijmon Koning (March 26 1658).

Pieter married 2 Aaf Olferts. Children: Geertje.

Aaf had a brother named Adriaan, mentioned in several court records with Aaf. It's possible their brother was Barent Ofkesz Schoenmaker as found at since Ofke is a variant of Olferts. Barent had several children baptized at the Wervershoof Reformed Church.

Pieter is listed in the will of Jan Simonsz dated Feb 8 1670 as Jan's brother. Three other brothers are listed here; their father is not.

In the will of Pieter's wife, Marij Pieters, dated Feb 27 1674, their children Pieter Joosjen, Dirk Manjes, Simon Koning and Geertje Pieters are listed. Also listed is Marij's brother Dirk Pieters from Broekoord. Pieter is listed as a farmer (boer) living in Broekoord.

In the boedelscheiding of Pieter Sijmonsz Manjes dated June 24 1682, Pieter is listed with his 2nd wife Aaf, his children Pieter, Dirk, Sijmon and Grietje. Aaf got the house, land of 100 roeden on the Kleingouw, and paid Pieter, Dirk and Sijmon 40 guilders. The following was split 3 ways for the boys: land of 1 morgen on the Kleingouw, 90 roeden between the Kleingouw and Langedelensloot. Griet's uncle Adriaen Olferts was her guardian, and he received for her 90 roeden on the Langedeelensloot and 45 roeden of other land. Pieter and Dirk signed it; Simon made a +, as did Aaf. The boys' land was divided up later that day by Uncle Dirk in another notary document. Pieter got 150 roeden on the Langedelensloot; Dirk got 1 morgen on the Kleingouw named Klamweijd, more land on the Weijdsloot, and 200 roeden behind Broekoord. Sijmon got 90 roeden on the Langedelensloot. In the future they would get more land: Dirk 75 roeden on the Broekoordersloot and the house in Broekoord, Sijmon the house on the Noorddijk close to the Kleingouw. Plus he needed to pay his brother Dirk 50 guilders.

In their marriage record, Pieter is from Onderdijk and Marij from Broekoort. Several court documents give Pieter the last name of Manjes after he is married. It's likely he took this name from his wife, a Mantel. Andijk is the only place in West-Friesland that I've found the last name Manjes in use - by Pieter and some of his descendants (most of whom were quick to replace it with another last name, indicating it was generational not hereditary), and by Cornelis Sijmonsz Manjes as found at and apparently no relation to Pieter or Marij.

Determining Simon's patronymic is quite difficult. In his son Jan's will, Pieter Simonsz Manjes appears first, the place the oldest usually takes. Therefore it's likely that Simon's father was Pieter, although he could have been Jan or Teunis instead. Unless better proof comes up, we'll call him Simon Pietersz.

There was only 1 Simon having children in the 1620's in Wervershoof: Simon Broersz & Aef Cornelis. They had a son Pieter 10 years too late to be our Pieter. And most other names of their children don't match our Pieter's family either. Most of Pieter's brothers lived in Onderdijk, but it doesn't seem they went to the Wervershoof Reformed Church. None of their records appear in the next town to the east, Medemblik, either. The next town to the southeast, Oostwoud, doesn't have any church records from before 1696 - it's possible the family lived on the border of Onderdijk and Oostwoud, going to the church in Oostwoud. Records there begin in 1696.
