    Robert D. Vandekieft - 91, Truro, formerly of Dartmouth, peacefully passed away at Colchester Regional Hospital on Friday, February 27, 2009 after a battle with cancer. Robert was born in Bussum, Holland in 1917, and was the son of the late Johan and Cornelia van de Kieft.

    He, his wife Martha and children immigrated to Canada in 1954. He lived most of his life in Dartmouth and had only recently moved to Truro. Robert will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his passion for travel and adventure that took him around the world, his zeal for theatre, his love of the Toronto Blue Jays and his unselfish generosity to a number of charitable organizations. His first career of many years was with the CBC, where he worked his way from a stagehand to retire as a director/producer. His second career was one as a dedicated volunteer at Pier 21, a place of great importance to him as it was the same port through which he immigrated. He was also a Dutch WWII veteran.

    Robert was predeceased by the love of his life, Martha, his wife of 58 years. He is survived by his loving family; daughter, Carla, sons, Robert (Judy), Walter (Mary) and Rick (Karen); grandchildren, Vincent, Jenine, Jennifer, Gennie, Sara, Joanna, Daniel, Joseph, Tina, Matthew and Kristen as well as 16 great grandchildren.

    On Saturday, March 7, 2009, Robert’s family will host a celebration of his remarkable life and all friends are welcome to attend. A visitation with the family will commence at 1pm, followed by a memorial service and reception at 2pm, all at A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth. (902-461-0700) As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.
