De familienaam Krol, een vooral in Friesland voorkomende variant van Krul, is oorspronkelijk een bijnaam geweest voor een gekrulde, oftewel iemand met krullend haar. Uit de Stadsrekeningen van Dordrecht blijkt dat de naam al vroeg wordt vermeld: Willame Crulleboye en Jan Crulle, beiden in 1286 [L. Brouwer, 'Wat hebben de voorouders van Krol en Cruijff gemeen?', in: OT kalender 24-4-1999].
