Burgemeester en schoolcommissie bezoeken op 20 mei de school te Hierden voor houden Examen.... Dewijl de voormalige onderwijzer AART KONING niet meer bij het Examen tegenwoordig was omdat hij wegens zwakke gezondheid in het najaar van 1852 zich geheel aan het Onderwijs had onttrokken, zoo werd hij echter door de Commissie uitgenoodigd zich nogmaals in het midden der Schooljeugd te vertoonen, onder welke hij zoo vele jaren werkzaam was geweest, van 1810 tot 1841 als Hoofdonderwijzer en vervolgens toen den post op zijnen Schoonzoon Evert Verschuur was overgegaan, nog steeds getrouw en met den grootsten ijver onderwijs gegeven had. Toen het Examen afgeloopen was, werd aan dezen waardigen Grijsaard, openlijk dank gezegd voor het goede dat hij in de Gemeente van Hierden gesticht had, vooral door aan de verstandelijke ontwikkeling der jeugd tevens eene zedelijke en godsdienstige opleiding te verbinden, en hem namens de Schoolcommissie een geschenk in Zilver met toepasselijk inschrift overhandigd, als aandenken en bewijs van erkentelijkheid voor betoonden ijver en groote verdiensten. De Grijsaard, zigtbaar ontroerd, sprak daarop een woord van dankzegging, schetste in korte woorden, hoedanig de toestand van het onderwijs bij de aanvaarding zijner betrekking was, en hoe het hem onder Gods Zegen en onder medewerking van het Gemeentebestuur was gelukt dien toestand te verbeteren. Thans hoewel rustend Onderwijzer bleef hij het grootste belang in het Onderwijs stellen en hoopte hij, dat het goede zaad door hem gestrooid, steeds tot heil van Hierden zou blijven verstrekken. Onder de wenschen, dat het hem vergund zou worden nog langen tijd bij genot van gezondheid, zijne eervolle rust te genieten, eindigde deze plegtigheid, die bij alle een' blijvende indruk zal achterlaten.
