ELSPEET — Temidden van hun zes kinderen, twaalf kleinkinderen, familie en vele bekenden, herdachten Evert en Adriana Kroes-Wentzel (beiden zijn 72 jaar) in restaurant Het Vergulde Hert het feit dat ze vijftig jaar geleden elkaar het ja-woord gaven. Traditiegetrouw gaf ook het burgemeestersechtpaar De Kovel blijk van hun belangstelling. In de ochtenduren vereerden zij het gouden bruidspaar met een bezoek aan huis en aan gesprekstof had men geen gebrek.

Evert Kroes is geboren in Speuld en groeide op in Elspeet. Al op jonge leeftijd ging hij als timmerman aan de slag en toen kwam de oorlog. Van 22 juni 1943 tot 22 juni 1945 verrichtte Kroes dwangarbeid in Berlijn. Al die tijd kreeg hij geen kans om met verlof naar huis te gaan. In Berlijn maakte hij natuurlijk het nodige mee, maar Kroes vertelt dat hij toen nog te jong was om alles als een loden last te ervaren. Pas op oudere leeftijd ging ik deze periode in mijn leven verwerken. Ook denk ik nog vaak aan mijn ouderlijk huis. Zo herinner ik me nog allerlei opmerkingen van mijn vader. Ik hoor hem bijvoorbeeld nog zeggen: als je arm bent is geen schande, maar als je je vertrouwen verliest, ben je alles kwijt. Ik heb die opmerking in mijn oor geknoopt en ook geprobeerd er wat mee te doen in mijn leven.' De wieg van Adriana stond in Amsterdam. Op tienjarige leeftijd was ze al met vakantie bij de familie Dries van de Berg In Elspeet. Ze genoot van het plattelandsleven en vanaf die tijd koesterde ze al de wens om ooit nog eens in Elspeet te gaan wonen. Na de bevrijding trok ze naar Elspeet en ging bij de familie Aart de Bruin aan de Nachtegaalweg in de kost. Ze werkte bij slagerij Joop uit de Bosch.

Al spoedig leerden ze Evert Kroes kennen, waarmee ze op 6 december 1946 op het stadhuis in Diemen in het huwelijk trad. Geld voor een bruilofstfeest was er niet. In de ouderlijke woning van de bruid kwam men enige tijd bijeen en daar bleef het bij. De kerkelijke bevestiging en inzegening van hun huwelijk vond plaats tijdens een zondagse eredienst in de hervormde kerk van Elspeet.

Evert Kroes heeft altijd veel voor de Elspeetse gemeenschap gedaan. Zijn eerste bestuursfunctie bestond uit het voorzitterschap van de Christelijke Gemengde Zangvereniging. Helaas werd dit koor na verloop van tijd weer opgedoekt. Vele jaren diende Kroes de Elspeetse Sportvereniging ESV als penningmeester, elftalleider en voorzitter. Verder was hij vele jaren voorzitter van de plaatselijke Oranjevereniging en maakte hij zich gedurende een periode van dertig verdienstelijk voor de BB (Bescherming Burgerbevolking).

De laatste jaren doen beiden het wat rustiger aan. Evert mag graag wat tuinieren en timmeren, terwijl mevrouw Kroes veel leest, puzzelt en borduurt. Beiden hebben nog een hartewens, namelijk dat ze zo spoedig mogelijk een bejaardenwoning in Elspeet kunnen betrekken.
