Her husband, Levi, a soldier stationed at Ft. Caswell, near Southport, probably a prisoner of war at this time. She was determined to go see him. There was now way of transportation except to walk. She therefore set out walking, and carrying the baby in her arms and neighbors taking care of the other 7. The baby was Daniel Lennon Swain. This distance was about 25 miles from her home in Shallotte, NC to Ft. Caswell, NC. Returning home night overtook her and she stopped near Supply, NC to spend the night with Llewellyn Leonard, suffered a severe headache and died before morning at 42 years of age. Her husband lived 12 years after her death.
