    DEATH OF MISS MARY STOKES
Died At Livingston After Short Illness - A Young Woman Of Fine Mental Powers and Delightful Personality.
-- Peculiarly sad was the death of Miss Mary Stokes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Stokes, which occurred Monday evening at Livingston in Orangeburg county, where she had been teaching during the past session. The young woman was stricken with pneumonia just two days before her school closed, and though everything possible was done the progress of the disease was rapid, and on Monday evening she passed away. Mrs. Stokes hurried to her daughter's bedside Saturday, and was present when the end came.

The remains were brought to Chester Tuesday morning over the Seaboard, and were met by sorrowing friends and conveyed to the home, where yesterday morning funeral services were held by Dr. H. A. Bagby, assisted by Dr. D. G. Phillips, and the mortal remains conveyed thence to rest in Evergreen cemetery until the re-union of flesh and spirit on the resurrection morn.

Miss Stokes was a graduate of Winthrop College, and there as in the public schools of Chester distinguished herself by her splendid scholarship and her devotion to duty, taking a high stand at both institutions. After her graduation she taught with fine success in the public schools of the State, and no community ever possessed a more painstaking and devoted teacher, one who put all that she had into her work and was satisfied only with the best of results. She was the possessor of a sweet and winsome personality, and she made a large circle of friends. She was bright and useful member of the Baptist church, and her life gave promise of rich and rare usefulness. The day that saw her body lowered into the grave was to have been her wedding day, which adds to the pathos of the occasion; and to the young man thus called upon to surrender his life's happiness as well as to the members of the stricken family, the tender sympathy of an entire community is extended.
