WHITEVILLE -- Harvey Richard Ward, 74, of Arn Ward Road died Tuesday.
He was a farmer and a member of Antioch Baptist Church.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Antioch Baptist Churchby the Rev. David Watts. Burial will be in Columbus Memorial Park.
Mr. Ward is survived by three daughters, Nancy Hewett of Courtland, Va.,Linda Ward of Whiteville and Betty Reaves of Wilmington; two sons, RustyWard of Whiteville and Lloyd Canady of Wilmington; three brothers, SolonWard and John H. Ward, both of Whiteville, and Marshall Ward ofFayetteville; three sisters, Mary White, Marie Sellers and Eva Powell,all of Whiteville; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Peacock’s Chapelin the Pines.

Whiteville-area farmer found slain at his home

WHITEVILLE -- An elderly Whiteville-area farmer, widowed for just a fewweeks, was killed in his home Tuesday, Columbus County Sheriff JimmyFerguson said.
A robber apparently surprised Harvey Ward in his home at 810 Arn WardRoad, about five miles south of Whiteville, Ferguson said. A neighborfound Ward's body about 7:50 p.m. Tuesday.
Ferguson said Ward had lived by himself since his wife died last month.
"I've known him for years," Ferguson said. "He was a real fine man. Hewas a hard worker and in really great shape for his age. He was stillactively farming."
Investigators are not saying how Ward was killed.
"Right now we want to hold on to that information," the sheriff said. "Wethink that will help with this investigation."

Columbus County sheriff pursues leads in murder investigation
WHITEVILLE -- Investigators are pursuing several leads but have madelittle progress toward an arrest in the murder of 74-year-old HerbertWard, Columbus County Sheriff Jimmy Ferguson said Friday.
Hundreds attended Ward's funeral Friday. A robber apparently killed Wardin his home at 810 Arn Ward Road on Tuesday. Neighbors found Ward's bodyin a pool of blood in his den.
Ward apparently died of stab wounds, assistant Columbus County CoronerWilliam Hannah said Friday.
"He had two major stab wounds," Hannah said, "one in the front and one ofthe back. I don't know yet which one killed him."
An autopsy was conducted at the office of the North Carolina MedicalExaminer in Chapel Hill. Hannah said he had not yet received a reportfrom the autopsy.

Farm worker charged in Whiteville farmer's death
WHITEVILLE -- A 19-year-old farm worker was charged Wednesday with thestabbing death of an elderly Whiteville farmer, Columbus County SheriffJimmy Ferguson said.
Loren Dewayne Hammonds, of 3456 Pleasant Plains Road, was charged withfirst-degree murder Ferguson said.
The sheriff said robbery was the motive for Herbert Ward’s death. Ward,74, was found dead in his home at 810 Arn Ward Road on Aug. 5.
Ward died of stab wounds, according to assistant county coroner WilliamHannah. He said Ward as stabbed once in the front and in the back.
Hammonds had worked for Ward, Ferguson said. The two lived about fivemiles apart.

WHITEVILLE -- Loren Dewayne Hammonds was sentenced to life in prisonTuesday for the Aug. 5, 1997, murder of Harvey Richard Ward ofWhiteville.
For Hammonds, 20, of Whiteville the guilty plea to first-degree murdermeant an automatic sentence of life in prison without parole.
Ward, 74, died of stab wounds inflicted by the young man he had hired towork in tobacco during the summer, Columbus County Sheriff’sinvestigators said.
