Joseph lived at the Island Plantation and is buried here. His wifeSusanne Blanchard Hemingway, nee Vereen is a distant cousin and is daughter of John E. Vereen of Windy Hill.

It is thought that the marriage of Joseph J. to Susanne Blanchard Hemingway that the Little River set of Vereens descend from the wives of Jeremiah Vereen (son of Jeremiah Vereen 1706-1768) and also JeremiahVereen (son to Susanne Blanchard Vereen) and wife of Sarah Stone living on the north side of Mullet Creek. In 1847 he received the following slaves from the John T. Hemingway: Jasper, Mariah and child Peter andJudy. His real estate was worth $800 and personal $450 and only Hartford living with him in 1870.
