According to the Jenerett Web Page, it is believed that he is the John Jeanerette who founded the town Jeanerette, LA. Don Jenrette says town is named for him.
According to information received via email dated 11 Nov 98 from DonInman: "John moved from North Carolina to the land his father had bought in Georgetown, South Carolina where he did some trading. His daughters must have stayed in North or South Carolina with his people when he moved to Louisiana." "He moved to Teche County (now Iberia Parish), Louisiana, in 1830 from the high hills of Santee, South Carolina (actually Georgetown) and bought what is now Pine Grove Place, eight miles below New Iberia. On October 1, 1831, in St. MaryParish, Louisiana, John consented to let his nephew, Elias Jeaneret ,become a masonry apprentice (See 4.). John was a sugar planter, justice of the peace, the first postmaster and the town of Jeanerette grew up around him. His friends claimed he had the character of the old, high-minded, South Carolina gentleman. His wife was a good, pious Methodist and John was a gambler. Their house would have preaching in the front parlor and gambling in the back room. After seven years of this, John finally lost his home and moved to Alabama.John, age 66, born in North Carolina, died of dropsy and was buried in Mobile, Alabama. He left an estate of over $2000 to his wife."
Don Inman in another email said that John skipped out on debts and moved to Louisiana leaving his daughters behind.
