1. Desire was a high-spirited woman and expert markswoman "who couldbring down a score of pigeons with a single shot".

2. Another anecdote of Desire is while John was in New London on juryduty, a great snow storm accumlated to the 2nd story windows of theirhome. Desire and her small son John embarked from a 2nd story window ina huge bowl, sliding down and across the frozen Mystic River, to heruncle's home on the opposite shore - a distance of more than a half mile.
