JOHN, EARL OF KENT, and LORD WOODSTOCK. next brother and heir, born 7April 1330, at Arundel, and baptized the same day in Pynham Priory. On 3October 1346 the King, then before Calais, requested Margaret, Countessof Kent, to send John, her son, with as many men as could be mustered, tothe King's assistance. On 26 August 1347 he was granted his father'slands to hold until he was of age, for his maintenance, and on 16 June1349 had a similar grant of the knights' fees and advowsons of hisinheritance. On 23 June following, when still under age, the King tookhis homage and gave him livery of his father's lands. On the death of hismother, 29 September 1349, he became, according to modern doctrine, LORDWAKE. On 1 October 1349 he was granted the wardship of his mother'slands, to hold, as from her death, until he came of age, for a payment of3,000 marks. On 1 February 1349/50 he had livery of £30 per annum fromthe issues of Kent and of the arrears thereof as from 26 August 1347. On10 April 1351 the King took his homage and gave him livery of all thelands which his father and mother had held in chief, his age havingpreviously been proved. He was summoned to a Council 20 July 1352, and toParliament (being then under age) from 1 January 1348/9 to 15 November1351, by writs directed Johanni comiti Kanc'. He granted the reversion(expectant on the death of Blanche, late wife of Thomas Wake) of thecastle, lands, and lordship of Liddel with its appurtenances in Englandand in Scotland to the King, who, on 20 May 1357, granted the saidreversion to John, Earl of Richmond, his son, the premises to be held intail male with reversion to the King and his heirs.
He married (Papal dispensation 3 April 1348, Elizabeth, daughter ofWillem or Guillaume, 1st Earl of Cambridge, also MARGRAVE (afterwardsDUKE) OF JULIERS, by Jehanne, daughter of Guillaume I or III, COUNT OFHAINAULT AND HOLLAND. He died s.p., in the night, 26-27 December 1352,aged 22, and was buried in the Church of the Grey Friars at Wincbcster.On 15 February 1352/3 his widow had livery of her dower, and on 4 Julyfollowing of the knights' fees and advowsons of her dower, all of whichhad been assigned to her by the King. She, who took a vow of chastity atWaverley Abbey, broke it by marrying, 2ndly, 29 September 1360, atWingham in Kent, Sir Eustace D'AUBRÉCOURT. In August 1360, a month beforehis marriage, he was granted an annuity of 40 marks for good service inthe King's wars. On 15 February 1363/4 certain payments were ordered tobe made to him and Elizabeth his wife, who was wife of John, Earl ofKent. He died soon after 1 December 1372, in the comti of Evreux. Shedied 6 June 1411, and was buried at the Grey Friars, Winchester. Will,desiring to be buried with her husband, John, Earl of Kent, proved 29June 1411, In it she describes herself as of Bedhampton (nearPortsmouth), one of the manors of the Earls of Kent. John Plantagenet, 3rd Earl of Kent, Baron Wake of Liddell (7 April 1330- 26 December 1352) was an English nobleman who was the posthumous son of Edmund of Woodstock, 1st Earl of Kent, and the uncle of King Richard II of England

He was born on 7 April 1330 at Arundel Castle, Sussex, England the youngest son and posthumous child of Edmund of Woodstock, 1st Earl of Kent and Margaret Wake, 3rd Baroness Wake of Liddell.[1] One of his sisters was Joan of Kent who was the mother of King Richard II of England by her second husband Edward, the Black Prince.
John's father was executed for treason on 19 March 1330 by the orders of Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March just three weeks before his birth, leaving his elder brother Edmund as the 2nd Earl of Kent. Upon Edmund's death in October 1331, John succeeded to the title of 3rd Earl of Kent and Lord Woodstock. He succeeded to the titles of Baron Wake of Liddell on 29 September 1349 as a result of his mother Margaret having died of the plague. John received livery of all his lands on 10 April 1351, upon coming of age three days earlier.[2]

John died on 26 December 1352 and he was buried at the Church of Greyfriars at Winchester. His titles passed to his only surviving sister Joan who became the 4th Countess of Kent, and the 5th Baroness Wake of Liddell suo jure.
